Nevada Hosts Backgammon Tournament
The Nevada State Backgammon Tournament was held in Las Vegas April 14-18. The event was by invitation only. The tournament staff included Sam Pottle, John Carrico, Pat Buehler, Carol Joy Cole, and Troy Longman. The Blitz Event charged a $40 entry fee and promised an 85 per cent return. The winners in each round of eight received $120. This allowed each winner to qualify for the playoffs. First place received 70 per cent of the prize; second place received 30 per cent. Every player was allowed to win up to two brackets of eight.
The tournament format included the championship, intermediate, and beginner. The championship series required a $50 registration fee along with a $450 entry fee. The intermediate level charged a $40 registration fee along with an entry fee of $160. Beginners paid a $15 registration fee and a $35 entry fee.
The tournament offered a variety of classes including the Blitz, Doubles, Super Jackpot, Limited Jackpot, the Seniors Tournament, the Super Jackpot, and Limited Jackpot. These events were all offered on the opening day. They were followed on Thursday with the Calcutta Auction. Later in the day offered the Championship, Intermediate, and Beginner Divisions. The Blitz also continued as did the doubles. This also brought the Super Jackpot to Round of 16 as well as the Limited Jackpot and the Open Jackpot.
Friday saw the beginning of the Mini-Match while the Blitz continued as did the Doubles. The Super, Limited, and Open Jackpot went to Round of eight. Saturday saw the Mini-Match, Blitz, and Doubles continue as well as the $50, $150, and $300 Jackpot. Sunday was the final day which brought the finals in each event.
