Lars Bentzon of Denmark was crowned the world’s new backgammon champion at the 35th Monte Carlo World Backgammon Championship this week.
Bentzon, also a professional poker player and online casino games star, wrapped up the world title at the event at the Fairmont Hotel in Monte Carlo. Nicknamed “Buster,” Bentzon is best known as fellow Dane and pro poker player Gus Hansen’s former manager.
Bentzon won €60.000 for the first prize and now owns the most prestigious title in backgammon. Bentzon beat Spanish/Lebanese Ricardo Mala 25-9 in the finals, after beating fellow countrywoman, and one of the leading female players in backgammon, Pia Jeppesen 23-16 in the semifinals.
The main division of the 35th Monte Carlo World Backgammon Championship, which opened July 11, started with a field of 158 backgammon players. Dozens more entered the Intermediate and Beginners’ divisions, which featured semi finalists Olivier Décultot of France and Pia Jeppesen of Denmark. The Doubles Tournament was won by Fuat Erdag and Ilhan Koc of Turkey.
Lars Bentzon is the fifth Dane to win the World Backgammon Championship. He was preceded by Lars Trabolt, who won the 2008 title (and the Super Jackpot event in 2010), Peter Hallberg (2004), Mads Andersen (2002) and Peter Jes Thomsen who broke the ground in 1993. Last year’s world champion, Japanese Masayuki Mochizuki (Mochy) has dropped already at the second round, but returned as a semi-finalist at the 2nd consolation event.

The US Backgammon Open took place on May 13th-16th in San Francisco. The tournament is the 2nd of its kind.
The Championship level of this tournament starts with a round of 64 players and then is progressively cut in half until only one player remains in the tournament. The field of players included 5 different players who were not from the United States.
One exciting aspect for those players who were not from the United States is that three different players managed to make it to the round of 16. These players were Robert Caradien, Michael Schweitzer and Sasan Taherzadeh. Of these three players one of them, Michael Schweitzer, managed to make it to the 3rd round before being eliminated by Mary Hickey.
With the elimination of Michael Schweitzer, that left only Americans to play each other for the championship in the Semifinal round. The four remaining players were Al Hodis, Mary Hickey, Dorn Bishop and Ken Blame.
In the semifinal matchup against Al Hodis, Mary Hickey managed to take home the victory, securing her spot as a finalist for the tournament. Dorn Bishop was likewise able to overcome Ken Bame in the seminfinal round in order to advance to the final round. Unfortunately only one player could remain between Mary Hickey and Dorn Bishop. Both had well played tournaments, but in the end it was Mary Hickey that took home the victory in the final round. This made Mary Hickey the champion of the 2nd US Open of Backgammon in San Francisco, California.

The Nevada State Backgammon Tournament was held in Las Vegas April 14-18. The event was by invitation only. The tournament staff included Sam Pottle, John Carrico, Pat Buehler, Carol Joy Cole, and Troy Longman. The Blitz Event charged a $40 entry fee and promised an 85 per cent return. The winners in each round of eight received $120. This allowed each winner to qualify for the playoffs. First place received 70 per cent of the prize; second place received 30 per cent. Every player was allowed to win up to two brackets of eight.
The tournament format included the championship, intermediate, and beginner. The championship series required a $50 registration fee along with a $450 entry fee. The intermediate level charged a $40 registration fee along with an entry fee of $160. Beginners paid a $15 registration fee and a $35 entry fee.
The tournament offered a variety of classes including the Blitz, Doubles, Super Jackpot, Limited Jackpot, the Seniors Tournament, the Super Jackpot, and Limited Jackpot. These events were all offered on the opening day. They were followed on Thursday with the Calcutta Auction. Later in the day offered the Championship, Intermediate, and Beginner Divisions. The Blitz also continued as did the doubles. This also brought the Super Jackpot to Round of 16 as well as the Limited Jackpot and the Open Jackpot.
Friday saw the beginning of the Mini-Match while the Blitz continued as did the Doubles. The Super, Limited, and Open Jackpot went to Round of eight. Saturday saw the Mini-Match, Blitz, and Doubles continue as well as the $50, $150, and $300 Jackpot. Sunday was the final day which brought the finals in each event.

Golf World Mourns With Tim Holland Passing Away.The World Backgammon Champion, Tim Holland, Has Died On March 3, 1931 a man by the name of Simeon Harold Holland was born in Rockville Centre, N.Y. The world was oblivious to the genius that had just entered it. As he grew he took a liking to different sports and games. He spent his early years as an amateur golfer, but was charmed by the game backgammon. Soon he would begin the process of mastering it.
He is known as Tim Holland the World Backgammon Champion. The title is well deserved. At the age of 36 he won the World Backgammon Association Championship. He reigned as the champion throughout 1971. However, he holds three world champions because a competition was not held in 1969 nor in 1970.
He also authored a few books about the game he loved so much. The titles are: Beginning Backgammon, Better Backgammon, and Backgammon for People Who Hate to Lose. The teaching help called Auto backgammon was a creation of his, and he opened a Backgammon club in New York, although it is no longer in use.
He lived 79 years, and he will always be remembered for his Backgammon skills shown in offshore casinos. Jon Bradshaw gives an undying image of this man in a book published in 1975. It is entitled, “Fast Company.”He states that Holland “rolled the dice and moved his men about the board with the poise of a man who knows victory is only a matter of time.” Now as he lays to rest, he will forever live on. Hats off to the world’s greatest.

A game played between two players, Backgammon is one of the most loved casino games for a long time. In order to play Backgammon, every player needs his own 15 checkers of the desired color to play the game. The board includes twenty-four triangles which are known as Points or pips. The triangles are alternately colored and divided into 4 quadrants, each including 6 triangles each. The quadrant is also termed as the home-board of a player.
The players have their own pair of dice and cup to play the game. The points for the players are numbered in their home board. Each of these points is further categorized by numbers. The outermost point / triangle of the board have 24 points which on the contrary is the opponent’s 1 point. The game also includes a doubling cube with doubled numbers like 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and finally 64 used for tracking the present stake of Backgammon.

The player with the highest number starts the game. Now, both the players will through the two dices together and continue the game until one of the player puts all the checkers off the board first and wins the game. If the dices fall on the right hand side of the board or out of it, it is known as “cocked dice”.
